Terminalia chebula (Chebulic Myrobalan) Gains Research Attention in New Areas of Clinical Interest

Terminalia chebula, also known as Chebulic Myrobalan or Haritaki, has long been valued in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily for digestive and detoxification support. Traditionally included in the well-known Triphala formulation, the fruit has been associated with gut health, immune modulation, and antioxidant effects.
However, recent research is expanding interest in this botanical beyond its traditional applications. Over the past year, studies have explored roles in cognitive support, microbiome regulation, antifungal defense, and even hair regrowth, making T. chebula an emerging herb of clinical interest for integrative practitioners.
Here are several areas where this powerhouse herb is expanding its clinical relevance:
1) Cognition + BDNF
A randomized controlled proof-of-concept trial tested a blend of Boswellia serrata and Terminalia chebula extracts in adults with memory complaints. The study reports improvements across multiple cognitive domains. What made this especially noteworthy is the effect on a critical protein for brain health and neuroplasticity: Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF. In this study, serum BDNF nearly doubled in subjects over 120 days (1).
2) Microbiome + GI Health
Another recent study used a Salmonella mouse gastroenteritis model and evaluated the effects of T. chebula against inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress markers, and other measures. The researchers demonstrate that T. chebula can reduce diarrhea rates, improve GI lesions, improve microbiome populations, lower pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) increase anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10), and address gastroenteritis through modulation of major signaling pathways including Ras (2).
3) Systemic candidiasis (homeopathic preparation)
One paper evaluated homeopathic formulations of T. chebula (including a preparation labeled potencies 6C/30C) in various models:
- In vitro: showed inhibitory activity against Candida albicans
- In vivo: showed benefits in a systemic candidiasis animal model, with improvements in survival and organ fungal burden
- In silico: docking of identified phytochemicals against fungal targets (β-tubulin, DHFR, sterol 14α-demethylase)
Authors report improved 8-day survival in treated groups (vs. low survival in controls), normalized leukocyte counts/antioxidant enzymes, and reduced renal fungal burden/histopathology.
4) Hair loss / AGA mechanisms: 5α-reductase, DHT metabolism, and finasteride-comparable effects in vivo
Another noteworthy study demonstrates the benefits of T. chebula in an androgenetic alopecia (AGA) framework (4).
Findings show that T. chebula:
- Activated TGF-β3 and other signaling in dermal papilla cells and upregulated AKR1C genes involved in DHT metabolism
- Inhibited type II 5α-reductase activity and mitigated DHT-induced damage in dermal papilla cells
- Reversed an AGA phenotype in mice with comparable efficacy to finasteride, while showing a distinct pattern of AKR1C gene expression
- In ex vivo human follicle/scalp organ cultures, reduced apoptosis and promoted proliferation consistent with hair growth stimulation
As global interest in plant-based therapies continues to expand, researchers are increasingly applying advanced methods—such as microbiome sequencing, metabolomics, molecular docking, and others—to renew the research interest in time-honored botanicals that may have been overlooked in recent years.
