Reishi in Integrative Breast Cancer Care

Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Oncology
For over two millennia, Ganoderma lucidum—known as reishi or Lingzhi—has been used in Asian medicine to strengthen immunity and overall vitality. Its modern integration into clinical oncology is based on a long-standing history of traditional use, together with increasing evidence that mushroom polysaccharides and triterpenes act as biological response modifiers, enhancing immune surveillance and improving tolerance to standard therapies. 
 
New data adds to the evidence showing reishi mushroom to be an effective natural support strategy for breast cancer specifically, with efficacy against even the most aggressive forms of this all-too-common disease.

Improved Outcomes in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
A recent clinical study of 388 TNBC patients at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center found that those using Ganoderma lucidum spore powder (GLSP) experienced significantly better overall (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates compared to controls.
  • Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were significantly higher in the GLSP group (HR = 0.159, p = 0.002; HR = 0.232, p = 0.005).
  • Benefits persisted after matching, with the greatest survival advantage in stages II and III TNBC (HR = 0.172, p = 0.004).
  • Median follow-up was over four years, providing robust longitudinal evidence.
These outcomes suggest that GLSP, when used alongside standard therapy, may positively influence long-term prognosis and recurrence risk in early-stage TNBC (1).
 
Reversing Chemotherapy Resistance
In a 2024 mechanistic study, Ganoderma lucidum extract (GLE) was shown to reverse multidrug resistance (MDR) in breast cancer cells resistant to paclitaxel (2).
 
Using a 3-D in-vitro model, researchers demonstrated that GLE:
  • Inhibited the ATPase activity of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), the efflux pump responsible for drug resistance,
  • Increased intracellular drug retention 
  • Modulated the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway to enhance cytotoxic sensitivity—without altering P-gp expression levels. This targeted modulation of P-gp and MAPK signaling points to a low-toxicity mechanism by which GLE could restore chemotherapy effectiveness in resistant breast cancer. 
Targeted Cytotoxicity via Ergosterol Peroxide
Another bioactive compound from Ganoderma lucidum, ergosterol peroxide (EP), demonstrated selective activity against TNBC models in a recent preclinical study (3).
 
EP induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in cancer cells, while sparing normal cardiomyocytes. 
 
In animal models, EP treatment resulted in:
  • Reduced tumor volume
  • Decreased metastasis to lung and liver
  • No observed hepatic toxicity
This differential cytotoxicity suggests EP acts as a precision oxidative modulator, damaging cancerous mitochondria without harming healthy tissue—an essential factor for successful integrative oncology protocols.
 
Integrative Oncology: The Future of Cancer Care 
Modern integrative oncology relies on personalized protocols that combine multiple clinical strategies including targeted immune modulation, and support for improved treatment tolerance, to support optimal patient outcomes. Medicinal mushrooms—including reishi, maitake, and turkey tail—are used as biological response modifiers, supporting innate and adaptive immunity during conventional cancer treatment. Studies have associated Ganoderma lucidum supplementation with:
